What is root canal treatment?

Endodontics (commonly known as root canal treatment) involves removing infected or damaged pulp from inside your tooth, before cleaning and sealing it.

During treatment, your dentist will access the root canals of the affected tooth, carefully clean and shape them, then seal the space to stop bacteria returning. Dentists carry out this procedure under local anaesthetic, so you won't feel any pain during treatment. Most patients find it no more uncomfortable than having a standard filling.

Do I need root canal treatment?

You might need root canal treatment if you're experiencing severe toothache, especially when biting down, or prolonged sensitivity to hot and cold that lingers after the source is removed. Swelling around the tooth or gum, or a small pimple-like bump on the gum, can also indicate infection.

If you're in significant pain, don't wait for a routine appointment, contact us and we’ll arrange to see you as soon as possible.
